I often see these complaints come into effect when the series introduces a "choose your waifu" system of some kind. Hell, a lot of these games have anime studios do opening animations and cutscenes for them. Ys IX, a game I just finished, reminds me of a Tales game in places, and those games are anime as hell. SMT has always held some degree of anime-influence (particularly stuff like Devilman comes to mind), and that's long before Persona went and basically just said "let's make a game that mixes JoJo with Jungian Psychology (and later Dating Sims)." Trails, and by extension most Falcom titles, also have used anime tropes in their writing for a long ass time. have always had anime tropes? Fire Emblem is a series that's always had an anime influenced art style, and it's always taken tropes that are also often used in fantasy anime/manga. All of the series I mentioned where people wince about anime tropes. Like, maybe I'm just so shameless a weeb that I don't find "weird anime tropes" to be a problem, but I really fail to see how games with art styles that evoke anime aesthetics having other anime elements is a bad thing. The only times I don't see this kind of complaining is in series that are unabashedly anime inspired (Compile Heart games come to mind), but I never understood why the whining even happens at all. Be it SMT/Persona (I see them as the same franchise), Fire Emblem, or even more niche JRPGs like the Trails/Kiseki series, there's a ton of people in those fanbases that complain about how the games have "become worse" due to "anime shit" getting brought into the games. I see this in fanbases of games that have anime art styles, which JRPGs largely use. Yet a lot of the time, I see people in fanbases bitch and whine about how some game is dragged down by "shitty anime tropes" or similar petty BS. I mean, most of you, I'd assume, like both Anime/Manga and JPRGs too, seeing as there's a lot of overlap in appeal between the mediums. I'm both a fan of JRPGs and Anime/Manga, which should come as no surprise to anyone here. What's that gripe? As the title of this post would suggest, it's about "stupid anime tropes" in JRPGs. Over the past however many years I've been lurking in JRPG fanbases, I've seen a common gripe come up in niche franchises, and it's something that I fail to even remotely grasp.
